Condition
The following condition report was kindly provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.:
This large and impressive picture seems to be in very good condition. Unterberger's technique is quite complex involving glazes and numerous reworked areas, particularly in this case, and while these delicate techniques are quite fickle, they do not appear to have been compromised here. The canvas is not lined and neither should it be lined.
Under ultraviolet light the paint layer reads quite strongly throughout, which supports the view of Unterberger's peculiar technique. Dark spots show under ultraviolet light at the top of the mountains on the left side and in the mountains in the distance. The color of the sky also reads quite darkly and there are other touches throughout the picture, almost all of which seem to be original. There may be a few retouches in the shadowed side of the mountain in the lower center. However, this picture does not need to be cleaned and if the frame were to be reexamined, it should be hung as is.
