Catalogue Note

These monumental works were commissioned for the grand salon of the home of M. Collier in the Bompard section of Marseille, where they were inserted between the room's three windows.  The compositions are remarkable for their painterly freedom in capturing the sight and sense of hunting and fishing excursions.  Viewed in such large (and rare) scale, it is easily appreciated how Monticelli's work inspired the Impressionists.  In particular Vincent van Gogh credited his move toward a brighter palette and expressive technique in part to viewing Monticelli's work in Paris in the 1880s.
