Condition

As this is a master model casting joints and pins are visible - most noticeably at the neck and upper arms. The body is cast in separate section and the joint is visible where it meets the drapery. The wooded background is also cast in separate section. Tehre are ares of green patination particularly to the face and the back and sides of the arms and torso. There is some dirt in the crevices and some wear to the surface consistent with age. Otherwise the condition is good.

Catalogue Note

Boucher reworked the figure of Volubilis in several forms. It is probably best known in the half figure marble reliefs with the nude emerging from the rough hewn rock. A marble version of the whole figure was sold in these rooms on 9th April 2003. The figure, with the addition of a framing background relief was also edited in bronze by Barbedienne. This is the master model for the edition. The complete figure holds the key to the work's title as Volubilis translates as 'morning glory', and refers to the flowers she is picking. The present bronze displays Boucher's skill as a modeller as he creates the softly flowing drapery and the background relief of dense forest.
