Catalogue Note
According to Poletti and Richarme Barye's Éléphant d'Asie was probably modelled in the 1850s and was presented in the Barye catalogues as the pendant to his Éléphant d'Afrique, which has a matching base and closely similar dimensions. The Éléphant d'Asie was cast in fifty examples by Barye over a twenty year period. The present fine bronze was cast by Hector Brame after Barye's death, as part of a very limited edition.
