Condition

Overall the condition of the bronze is very good with some minor wear to the patina consistent with age. There are some visible casting joints and pins to the proper right ankle and upper left arm.

Catalogue Note

Sicard exhibited a cast of Oedipus and the Sphinx at the Salon in 1903. It was acquired by the state for the Musée du Luxembourg and is now preserved in the Musée d'Orsay (RF3308).  The model is illustrated in Barbedienne's catalogue of 1911 priced at 850 francs for a non-gilt version.The work was also edited in biscuit by Sèvres. Another gilt bronze cast was sold in our New York rooms on 14th April 2008 for $34,000.
