Catalogue Note
In the oeuvre of Vincenzo Gemito female nudes are extremely rare. La Nutrice was modelled in 1889 and portrays a nursing mother with uncompromising realism, tempered by tender sensitivity. Her weariness is very physically portrayed in a posture which curves in on itself as the woman leans forward supporting herself with her right arm. The present bronze is a particularly fine cast, with a deep patina which lends warmth to the model.
