Description

  • Frederic, Lord Leighton, P.R.A., R.W.S.
  • Portraits of Enrico Gamba and Stefano da Rimini; Study of a bust of the poet Bellini
  • One signed with monogram and dated 1854 c.l. and inscribed; Stefano da Rimini/ Roma; another bears Gamba's monogram and is dated 1852, two bear the collection stamp of Edward Von Steinle

  • All pencil, one heightened with white watercolour on buff paper, with a letter from the artist relating to each of the drawings dated 18.1.90; 'The drawings are quite right. The darkest of the three - with E.G. in a monogram under it – is a portrait of my old friend and fellow student under Steinle in the old Frankfurt days. Enrico Gamba who became an artist of some distinction and died a few years ago in Turin. The curly headed old Florentine is I think the poet Bellini - the drawing was made from a XVth Cty bust of great beauty then at the Uffizzi – now at the Bargello. 'Stefano da Rimini' was a model – I drew him when I was painting Cimabue in Rome and when ----- was our constant table companion at the "Lepre". I used to envy his superb appetite.'

Provenance

Provenance: Given by the artist to his tutor Edward Von Steinle
