4to (410 x 310mm.), 90 watercolours by Ewart, mostly two or three to a page, and 52 albumen prints of various sizes, including 21 small prints (60 x 88mm.) pasted down, the others loose, by P. Sebah, Frith and others, contemporary half morocco gilt, some spotting, a little wear to some photographs, slightly rubbed

Catalogue Note

Nearly all of the watercolours are captioned and dated by Ewart, who notes that many of the drawings "were done while treking or sailing - often sailing fast - in the hours before sunset and half hour after (one or two in the morning light are thus named." Mary Anne Ewart (1830-1911), daughter of the politician William Ewart (1798-1869), "was an early patron of higher education for women and a benefactor and governor of Newnham College, Cambridge, Somerville College, Oxford, and Bedford College, London." (ODNB)
