Catalogue Note
The present lot is probably a posthumous cast of an early example of Vonnoh's work from the period in which she signed her work with her maiden name, Bessie Potter. When she married painter Robert Vonnoh in 1899, she began adding her married name to her signature.
Julia Marlowe (1866-1950) was one of the great Shakespearean actresses of her day. She began her career at the age of 11 as a member of the chorus in a juvenile traveling production of Gilbert and Sullivan's H.M.S. Pinafore. By 1895, she made her Broadway debut in Henry IV and went on to appear in over seventy Broadway productions. Her first husband was fellow actor Robert Taber (1865-1904), whom she divorced in 1900.
