Catalogue Note

The sitter's husband, James Wilson, graduated from Princeton University and eventually became pastor of a congregation at New London, Pennsylvania. He served as a chaplain in the Revolutionary War and due to illness, retired from the ministry in 1778. Ann Wilson (nee Stuart), the subject of this portrait, likely married her husband after he left the ministry and took up work as a merchant on the eastern shore of Maryland.
