Catalogue Note
The French painter Jacques-Emile Blanche was a friend of the Impressionists Manet, Degas and Renoir. He also became close to the Anglo-Australian Charles Conder after they shared a holiday together at Dieppe in the summer of 1895; his 1904 portrait of Conder is in the Tate collection, while Blanche appears in Conder's Landscape with figures (lot XX in this catalogue).
The present work is a late view of one of Blanche's favourite subjects - the beach, promenade and bathing boxes at Dieppe - painted in the artist's characteristic spotty, impressionist brushwork and high-key palette.
