Catalogue Note

In her catalogue raisonnĂ©, Helen Topliss notes that the handling, tone and signature of this work are consistent with works painted in Italy in the summer of 1913, when Roberts was staying at Villa Adele, a health resort at Madesimo Sullo Spluga.  A number of these Italian mountain pictures were included in the artist's Australian exhibitions of 1920.  The present work is here identified as The eyrie on the basis of the dimensions given in the Athenaeum catalogue (9 1/2 by 6 1/2inches).
