Catalogue Note

The subject for the present work borrows from a rich history of artists' studies of the interiors of their homes. These residences, often make-shift studios, are filled with the flotsam and jetsam of bohemian life, while also being mundanely functional and intimately familiar scenes that had deep personal meaning for artists such as Vincent van Gogh.

In works like the present, it is not simply the objects held within these personal domains but the treatment of the composition that reveals much about the artist. Between 1955 to 1960 Kessanlis moved to Rome, and was in Paris throughout much of the 1960s; this early work is evidence of a blossoming talent, at this phase a product of his environment and the teachings of his professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts, Yannis Moralis.

The present work is sold with a photograph of the painting in the artist's home.
