Catalogue Note
Painted circa 1927.
Executed during Bouzianis' time in Germany, and directly preceding his so-called 'Paris Period', this depiction of a young boy is illustrated with the artist's characteristically disproportionate limbs, blunt, schematised features and a lack of distinctive elements to substantiate his age. What remains is richly emotive, tactile and substantial, while being built up of layer upon layer of bold yet diaphanous colour.
The immediacy that Bouzianis learnt to capture from German Impressionists such as Max Liebermann is invested with an acute emotional content, making his portraits an expression of the artist's state of being while placing the sitter within the realm of subjective interpretation.
