Catalogue Note

Painted the same year that Engonopoulos exhibited at the Venice Biennale, this work is a fine example of the Greek houses he painted throughout his lifetime. In a career dominated by the Surrealist style and content of his art and poetry, Engonopoulos retained respect and admiration for the trappings of the modern Greece he loved and the traditions, art and architecture of the Greece of his personal experience. His frame of reference reflected his statement: 'I am a Greek along with the familiar images that surround me' (quoted in Modern Greek Art. The 20th Century, Athens, 1999, p. 116).
