  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Rome, Christie's, 22 May 2001, lot 202, where acquired by the present owner.

Condition

The canvas has been relined. The paint surface is secure, clean and under a glossy varnish. The blues of Mary's cloak have worn over time and discoloured retouching work is evident in these areas. There are some areas of retouched damage most notably one of 5 by 7 on the left of the right hand angel's face and along the old stretcher lines running through the centre of the painting and along the left hand edge. Inspection under UV light reveals scattered other retouching and areas of repaint to the darks, the lower half of the figure of Joseph and a vertical broken line of approx 34 cm through the infant Christ. Offered unframed.
