Description

  • Bernardo Strozzi
  • Saint Cecilia
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Rome, Christie's, 22 May 2001, lot 281, (as Strozzi and Workshop), where acquired by the present owner.

Condition

The canvas has a recent relining. The paint surface is clean and under a glossy varnish. There are a number of minor retouched damages, the largest of which is 3 by 3 cm, just above the cherub's hand. Inspection under UV light reveals retouching work along all four margins, in the red velvet of her dress and some strengthening to the left hand side of her face. In all the above areas the retouching work had been well carried out and although a little discoloured in the red velvet it is otherwise fairly unobtrusive. Offered in a carved gilt wood frame with some losses.
