Description
- Nicolas Tournier
- Young Boys Playing Backgammon An Old Man Watching in the Background
- oil on canvas
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 12 July 2001, lot 151, £18,000, where acquired by the present owner.
Condition
The painting is slightly less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has been relined recently and effectively, though this has not overly flattened the paint surface, which is clean and secure. To the naked eye the picture appears in fair condition. When inspected under UV light some localised cosmetic rather than structural strengthenings flouresce. Some areas of restoration are also present: in the lower left corner; in the white area of clothing of the boy to the right; a small area of restoration to the left of the old man's head (2 cm by 2 cm); an area of restoration of 8 by 10 cm above the left hand of the boy to the left; a larger area to the left of the boy's head to the left, running to the left edge. The painting is however, in large parts untouched.
The painting is offered in a carved and painted frame in fair condition.
