Saint Nicholas portrayed full length, holding the book of Gospels in his left hand, surrounded with sixteen scenes showing events in his life, from the upper left corner: birth of Nicholas; baptism of Nicholas; Nicholas cures the woman with the paralysed hand; Nicholas attends to school; being inaugurated as Bishop; Nicholas appearing in a dream to the Emperor Constantine; Nicholas exorcising the Devil from the spring; Nicholas prevents the execution of the three Generals; the rescue of the Merchant from Pskov; the rescue of ship wreck sailors during a storm; the rescue of Dimitri from drowning at sea; visit to the three Generals in prison; Nicholas returns the young Basil, captured by Arabs as a slave for the emir, to this parents; Nicholas saving a girl from dishonour; in Constantinople Nicholas buys the robe from an old, impoverished man, Kozlok to return it to the man's wife; funeral of Nicholas

Condition

The icon has been divided into parts, and then glued back together; background stripped to the gesso; repairs and some overpainting from the 19th century, modern retouching. We would advise prospective buyers to view the lot.
