Catalogue Note

Pieces from the Guriev service are characterised by their great variety of decorative designs.  With more than one hundred variations of the stylised gilded ornaments against red ochre ground, the service is often referred to as "the encyclopedia of Empire style decoration".  The painting was executed by G. Zyuzin and I. Ankudinov and the gilding done by Bokur.

Originally, the service was commissioned for the Winter Palace and was stored in the rooms of Empress Elizaveta Alexeevna; in 1848 it was sent to Peterhof.  Catering for 50 persons, the service was much loved by the Imperial famliy, who used it throughout the 19th century.

E. M. Korneev (1782?-1839) was a Russian artist and explorer who created a series of illustrations depicting the peoples of Russia.  The 1812-1813 publication Les peuples de la Russie, ou Description des moeurs, usages et costumes des diverses nations de l'Empire de Russie contained drawings by Korneev.
