Catalogue Note

The bas-relief on the base of the sculpture illustrates the scene just before the capture of the horse, depicting a horseman pursuing a herd of wild horses and the moment when he is about to lasso the one nearest to him.
The wax model of this composition was first exhibited by Lanceray at the Salon in 1876.  This work is widely recognised to be one of his best for its delicate treatment of the horse's musculature shown at a moment of extreme tension.
