Catalogue Note

This painting will be reproduced and discussed in the forthcoming book on Abraham Manievich by Alan Pensler and Mimi Ginsberg.  The authors write of the painting:

Newburgh is a quintessential American Scene subject: a main street in a small town. Rather than using the somber palette typical of most [American] painting of the time however, Manievich paints Newburgh with bright, adventurous colors in his own novel, restless style.  The authoritative skill of his brushwork never muddies the abundance of color in his paintings, and his respect for the symbolic nature and descriptive power of color does not allow for it to be merely a presence on the canvas.
