Provenance

Arsen Chabanian studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris where he perfected his technique for depicting the sea. He greatly admired the work of Ivan Aivazovsky, his friend and contemporary, whose influence is evident in the present lots. Many of Chabanian's pictures now hang in important institutions in Europe, including the Luxembourg Museum of Paris.

Condition

Oil on canvas. The surface is a bit dirty and covered with a layer of yellowed varnish. There are spots of minor craquelure and also spots of staining, particularly to the center (above water) and left edge. There is minor paint loss around the edges and a small scratch in the upper left corner. The canvas is slightly buckled in the upper right corner. Under UV some pigments fluoresce in the sky and sea but varnish prevents a conclusive analysis. Held in a gold painted wood frame with plaster molding. Unexamined out of frame.
