Catalogue Note

Traditionally, Nice has been one of the favourite resorts of the Russian Imperial Family, and Empress Maria Alexandrovna liked to spend her winters there. Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich visited for the first time in August 1864, when he accompanied his father and brother on their trip to Darmstadt. He rushed back to Nice only half a year later in April 1865 to be at the bedside of his elder brother, Tsarevich Nikolai (Nixa), who suddenly fell gravely ill and died there on 12 April.
