Description

  • length of each: 10cm, 4in.
the first of lacewood, the lid applied with the diamond-set cipher of King Milan I of Serbia (1854-1901, r. 1882-1889), cabochon sapphire thumbpiece, green and red tinder cord; the second with Art Nouveau flourish mounts, the corner applied with a crown, both with vesta compartments, both apparently unmarked

Condition

First (Milan of Serbia): This case is in poor condition and is one of the few objects in the collection to have suffered from its journey. There is a large hole in the base measuring approx. 2x1.5cm, with additional breaks. Split to side near vesta compartment. Area of scuffing on the lid, visible in the catalogue photo. Second (crown): Fair condition, with scratches overall to the varnish. The vesta compartment does not open. Sotheby's recommends that potential bidders view this lot in person before bidding.
