Catalogue Note

Ferdinand I was a cousin of Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna, who admired his "instinct for greatness".  When she and Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich visited Sofia in 1917, Ferdinand asked her to help him find a second wife.  She obliged by convincing her close friend and another cousin, Princess Eleanore of Reuss-Köstritz, to marry him the following year (see S. Constant, Foxy Fredinand: Tsar of Bulgaria, 1980, pp. 250-1).
