Catalogue Note

The two eldest daughters of King Christian IX of Denmark, Empress Maria Feodorovna and Alexandra, Princess of Wales, later Queen Alexandra, were close throughout their lives.  After the death of Emperor Alexander III in November 1894, Alexandra travelled to St Petersburg and remained at her widowed sister's side for two and a half months, during which time she often saw Grand Duke Vladimir and his family, presenting this case to him at Christmas.
