Catalogue Note

In 1866, Grand Duke Alexander Alexandrovich, future Emperor Alexander III, accompanied by his younger brothers, Grand Dukes Vladimir and Alexei, visited Denmark.  King Christian IX invited the honoured guests to his summer residence in Fredensborg, where 10 days later the engagement of Alexander to Princess Dagmar was announced.  To celebrate the occasion, a state banquet was organised and attended by the Grand Dukes.  As was customary, the hosts and guests must have exchanged gifts.
