Catalogue Note

On Van Gelder Zonen laid paper with a figural watermark

In a letter dated August 25, 1925, the subject wrote: "Sargent made his lithograph of myself in 1897.  I don't think there were more than six or eight printed, but I may be wrong.  I had three copies, one of which is signed and dedicated; one which I gave to my father, which my brother Albert now posseses. Sargent, I remember, gave a copy to Helleu, who liked the drawing.  It was made in my old studio in Chelsea."
