Probably acquired by Sir William Courtenay, 1st Bt. (1628 – 1702) and thence by descent.

Condition
The Carolean armchair is generally in fair condition for its age. The left hand arm has been cracked and repaired. There are old repairs to the right hand side of the splat including the incorporating of old elements to effect a repair. The back rail has been replaced and corner strengthening brackets have been added within the rails. The seat has been re-caned.There is old worm damage throughout and characteristic losses to the tips of all legs. The lower rail of the back has been replaced. The other chair has extensive restoration including a replaced upright and repairs to the stretchers but is nonetheless an attractive chair. There is a small hole in the caning to the back.
