Description
in 17th century manner, with cane seats (13)
Provenance
Acquired by William Courtenay, 10th Earl of Devon, (1777-1859) and thence by descent.
Literature
Inventory 1880, possibly the set of incorporating ten cane seat chairs recorded in the Library
Condition
A good decorative group, with most of solid stance.
There is splitting to the cane on one seat.
Perforation to the cane of another.
The cane is slightly loose at the front of one chair.
One chair has a split to the side rail that supports the cane.
It is likely that some of the chairs have been re-caned.
General Overview:
The group represents good value; however, there is the kind of wear one would expect from practical use. In ‘country house’ condition with minor old marks and scratches. A good decorative group.
