Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas is unlined and in very good condition. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears o be in very good condition. There is one small area of residue in the extreme lower left. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals some minor strengthening to the fingers and to areas of the sitter's face. There is a relatively opaque varnish overall. FRAME held in a Rococo style carved and gilded frame.

Catalogue Note

The present painting is a version of the prime version by William Owen (Christ Church College, Oxford), which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1811. The sitter was Headmaster of Westminster School and Dean of Christ Church Oxford from 1779, both of which establishments William, 10th Earl of Devon attended, graduating from Christ Church in 1798.
