Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas is unlined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in good, original condition. There are a small number of minor chips of paint loss in the background, scattered in the background overall, where the craquelure has started to flake. There is a layer of old, discoloured varnish and dirt overall. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals one small area of retouching to the background, above and to the right of the sitter's head, and confirms the opacity of the original varnish. FRAME Held in a carved and gilded wooden frame. For further information on the present lot please contact Julian Gascoigne on 0044 (0)20 7293 5482, or via email at julian.gascoigne@sothebys.com.
