Description
- Edward Weston (1886-1958)/Cole Weston (1919-2003)
- 'CABBAGE' (39V)
- gelatin silver (photograph)
mounted, signed by Cole Weston in pencil and stamped on the reverse, 1931, printed by Cole Weston from his father's negative, probably in the 1950s (Conger 649)
Provenance
Originally from the collection of Larry Coffey (1941-2004), a noted San Francisco hair stylist and a friend of artist Andy Warhol
Condition
This print by Cole Weston, mounted to cream-colored Crescent illustration board, is in generally excellent condition. When examined in raking light, 2 vertical, linear lines appear to run the length of the print along the left and right edges. Four tiny indentations do not appear to break the emulsion.
The mount edges are lightened and there is a small abrasion along the bottom. '1955' is annotated in an unidentified hand in pencil on the reverse.
Cole and Brett Weston printed from their father's negatives as early as the 1950s. The annotations on the reverse of this photograph are an early version of an inscription that would later become a stamp: 'Negative by Edward Weston, Print by Cole Weston.' In the case of the early Cole print offered here, the name 'Edward Weston' is stamped, but the rest of the inscription - 'Negative by' and 'Print by Cole Weston' - is written in pencil in Cole's hand.
