Catalogue Note

This gilt bronze figure of a Roman emperor was probably inspired by one of the statuettes that surmount the famous Tazze Aldobrandini. This series of twelve highly decorated silver bowls was made in Rome around 1560 and was in the inventory of  the powerful Aldobrandini family during the 17th century. The Tazze have been dispersed into different collections; the example in Lisbon's Museu Nacional is missing its finial Ceasar.
