En 1893, l'appel sous les drapeaux menace Emile Bernard qui vient de se brouiller avec Gauguin. Antoine de la Rochefoucault, son mécène, l'aide financièrement à partir pour l'Egypte où il se maria et vécut pendant plus de 10 ans. Notre tableau à été peint au tout début du séjour de l'artiste en Egypte.
