Catalogue Note
Alexandre Iacovleff, peintre voyageur russe, a beaucoup visité l'Afrique et les pays orientaux, notamment lors de la croisière noire et de la croisière jaune. Il en a rapporté de nombreux portraits des habitants de ces régions encore peu connues au début du XXème siècle. Le peintre s'intéressa beaucoup aux coutumes des différents peuples qu'il a rencontrés. Il a dessiné de nombreux portraits d'africains ou d'orientaux au fusain ou à la sanguine qui, aujourd'hui encore, restent des documents ethnographiques de grande importance.
En 1928, Alexandre Iacovleff visita l'Ethiopie avec Henri de Rothschild, notre dessin a très probablement été exécuté durant ce voyage.
