Catalogue Note
Entre 1945 et 1952, Jacques Majorelle entreprend un voyage en Afrique noire afin de trouver de nouveaux sujets d'inspiration.
A la suite de ce voyage sa peinture évolua nettement. Il va alors peindre des tableaux dans lesquels des couleurs vives et chatoyantes contrastent avec les camaïeux de noir et blanc.
Le souk, dans lequel la lumière traverse des toits sommaires, permettant de garder la fraicheur des petites rues, est un sujet parfait pour travailler le clair-obscur qui intéresse désormais le peintre. Ici la djellaba bleue vive du personnage central contraste parfaitement avec le décor noir et blanc alentour. La poudre d'or utilisée à profusion permet la mise en valeurs de certains éléments du tableau et donne du relief à l'oeuvre.
