Oil on cardboard. The ultra violet light reveals a diagonal retouch (cm 3 long circa) near the top right-hand side corner and other small retouches (cm 5 circa) in the center and on the far left-hand side over the yellow stripe of the sky. Some others along the top edge near the frame. The work has been partially cleansed over the right-hand side of the grass. The overall condition as to the state of preservation is very good.

Nell'ultimo decennio del XIX secolo, grazie anche all'influenza delle prime biennali veneziane, Angelo Dall'Oca Bianca allarga le proprie vedute e si interessa al divisionismo e al simbolismo. Ne sono testimonianza lavori importanti come Gli amori delle anime, nella Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Verona, e Le luci pietose, che vedono intensificarsi la gamma dei colori, già molto densa e violenta, e il frazionamento della luce e dell'immagine, secondo i dettami delle correnti fin de siècle.

L'influenza di Pellizza da Volpedo è particolarmente evidente nel nostro Poesia Pastorale, in cui una fila di tacchini sostituisce la lunga teoria di pecore di ascendenza dantesca del pittore piemontese. Il dipinto di Dall'Oca Bianca è volutamente di stampo più prosaico, e soprattutto ironico, come suggerisce il titolo di un'opera di soggetto identico al nostro, Il capitale della contadina, realizzata nel 1901 circa (cfr. Verona, Palazzo Forti, La formazione di Angelo Dall'Oca Bianca, 1968, fig. 47).
