Condition

Overall very good condition, but with some small losses throughout including: some tips of swords, ears of one horse, foreleg of one horse, tips to some arrows on foot, small losses to ivory on underside of knop above base; on lid: Jupiter's left hand and part of drapery, two hands of a Turk missing. Small repairs include: hands of one turk, hilt of a sword, two arms of a Turk; on lid: forearm and hand of Jupiter's right arm, repaired crack on back of one Turk, repair to some of Jupiter's drapery. Vertical crack down one side of main cylinder. Otherwise minor chips and age cracks. Silver probably English, circa 1820.

Catalogue Note

This intricately carved cup and cover was probably made to commemorate the defeat of the Turks at the gates of Vienna in 1683.  The silver is probably English, circa 1820.
