Panel is uncradled. under an extremely dirty and discolored old varnish. paint surface has been somewhat abraded overall and this is particularly noticeable in the background landscape at either side and in the finials of the gothic throne. some tiny old filled losses can be seen at left side. the blue pigment of the Virgin's costume has discolored with age, possibly due to oxidation. despite all this, the overall composition reads reasonably well and with careful restoration, the painting's appearance could be improved. ultraviolet light reveals some retouching to Virgin's blue drapery, in sky at left, a few dots of repaint on flesh tones of angels, and a few on face of Virgin. there could be other older restorations, but it's hard to see through the old varnish. In a shadow box frame with red velvet and gilt inner frame; some losses on the gilding.
