Provenance

Said to have been owned by the Montgolfier family;
Purchased by the present collector in circa 1999.

Condition

Painting is unlined. Overall the picture presents a very nice image. Coloration, shading and detailing are well preserved. UV confirms very good state of preservation. One small patch of overpaint visible under UV on far right side of composition. Painting may be hung as is. In a carved giltwood frame with a small loss on right edge.

Catalogue Note

The Montgolfier brothers (see Provenance), Joseph-Michel (1740-1810) and Jacques-Etienne (1745-1799), were the inventors of the hot air balloon (globe aĆ©rostatique).  The first public demonstration of their balloon in flight took place on June 4, 1783 in Annonay in southern France.
