Description

  • A Syrian Basalt Door with Relief Decoration
  • 57 by 35 1/2 in. 145 by 90.2 cm.
carved in relief with six square panels of equal size, three on either side of a central vertical channel, one panel carved with a Master of the Animals motif, the others with floral or geometric motifs, including a six-petaled rosette, concentric squares, a Maltese cross with implements between the arms, and a wheel with alternating pointed and voluted spokes.

Provenance

acquired in 1969 by the present owner from Asfar Bros., Hotel St. George, Beirut [inv. no. 186]

Condition

condition appears to be very good, note old chips to central vertical ridges and to lower edge near right corner, door is very heavy and still has to be removed from the crate in order to inspect the back and sides
