- A Byzantine Mosaic Panel with Basin, Gazelles, and Birds, Syria
- 69 1/4 by 68 1/8 in. 176 by 173 cm.
depicting in multicolored tesserae a basin flanked by two addorsed gazelles with heads turned back, two drinking water birds standing on one leg, and two addorsed pheasants on either side of a leafy branch, the broad gadrooned vessel resting on the capital of a column with stepped base, flowers in the field.

acquired in 1969 by the present owner from Asfar Bros., Hotel St. George, Beirut
Condition
Tesserae set in heavy modern concrete slab, a few isolated tesserae missing, note losses in lower left corner, excess grout covers parts of tesserae in most areas, colors are less vivid in person than in the catalogue illustrations.
