Catalogue Note

The attribution to Trevisani was first suggested by Eric Schleier, and has since kindly been confirmed by Karin Wolfe on the basis of photographs. The design relates to Trevisani's painting of this subject in the Schönborn collection, Schloss Weissenstein, Pommersfelden, which is generally dated to around 1708-10 (see F.R. DeFederico, Francesco Trevisani, Washington 1977, p. 50, no. 41, plate 33). Another version was sold New York, Christie's 22 May 1998, lot 70, where it was dated circa 1678.
