Description

  • Jacopo Robusti, called Jacopo Tintoretto
  • Portrait of Alvise Vendramin
  • inscribed lower left: AVS VENDo PROVISOR
  • oil on canvas, unframed

Provenance

With van Diemen, Berlin;
Their forced liquidation sale Berlin, Paul Graupe, 26-27 April 1935, vol.II, lot 98;
With Arthur Goldschmidt, Berlin 1935 (probably acquired at the above sale);
Acquired from the above by William Randolph Hearst, California in 1935;
Restituted to the heirs of Jacob and Rosa Oppenheimer from the State of California at Hearst Castle in 2009.

Condition

The painting has been recently cleaned, restored and relined and synthetic board has been attached to the reverse of the stretcher. The paint surface is secure and there is a restored horizontal damage, perhaps as a result of old frame abrasion, running across the lower edge. Inspection under UV light is impeded by the thick varnish but scattered retouchings do fluoresce most notably in the darks of the background and the sitter's armour. Offered unframed.
