Description

  • Richard Brakenburgh
  • Peasants gathered outside a tavern with a man reading a paper, an amorous couple, and a fiddler in the background
  • traces of a signature lower left

  • oil on panel

Condition

The actual painting is a little less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single flat panel is bevelled along all edges and is in good condition. The paint surface is under a dirty varnish layer. The panel is enlarged to all but the left sides with a thin strip of wood of approx. 3 mm. The paint surface is fairly abraded. Tiny scattered discoloured retouchings are visible to the naked eye, e.g. in the figures, the house and the sky. Under UV light larger areas in the sky and along the edges become apparent. Offered in a later plain wood frame in good condition.
