Description

  • B*** Cornelisz.
  • Barn interior with a still life of carrots, gherkins, a barrel and a copper pot, with an earthenware bowl and a strainer
  • signed in monogram and dated centre left: BC1655.

  • oil on panel

Condition

The actual painting is less red and more subdued in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel is flat and stable and lightly bevelled on all sides. There are two tiny paint losses along the upper and lower edge. The paint layer is secure if slightly abraded in the background. Minor strengthening can be observed in the background and in the pots in the foreground. Inspection under UV light reveals more extensive retouching to the background, but the still life in the foreground appears to be well preserved. The paint surface is under a thick and slightly dirty layer of varnish. Offered in a decorative gold painted wood frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note

A similar barn still life, signed and dated 1655, was sold from the New York Historical Society, New York, Sotheby's, 12 January 1995, lot 4. This unrecorded artist, probably working in or around Rotterdam, is not to be confused with Barent Cornelisz. who is actually Barent Cornelisz. Kleeneknecht (circa 1609-1674) and who signed his works in monogram B.C.K.. The latter merely painted marines and very little else.1
