Description

  • Petrus Staverenus
  • A laughing man wearing a black hat
  • bears signature centre right:  H HA(in compendium)ls
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Bought by the great-grandfather of the present owner in the 1930s.

Condition

The actual painting is less red and more subdued in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel seems to consist of three planks joined vertically and is cradled to the reverse. The joins are slightly visible to the front. No major damages are apparent. Small discoloured retouchings can be observed along the joins, in the figure's coat and hat. The paint surface is under a slightly dirty and dull varnish. Inspection under UV light reveals additional scattered retouchings throughout, in particular in the background. Offered in a decorative wood and plaster gilt frame in good condition.
