Description

  • Nicolaes Maes
  • Portrait of a gentleman, half-length, wearing a dark blue coat with a white chemise
  • signed and dated lower right: NM(in compendium)AES/ 1676
  • oil on canvas, in a painted oval

Condition

The actual painting is somewhat softer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has an effective relining. The paint surface is under a fairly clear varnish and there's a fine craquelure throughout, which is beginning to lift in some areas. The paint surface is well preserved though a little thin in the brown hues. Inspection under UV reveals a few spots of retouching, e.g. in the figure's coat, in the right background, and along the right edge. In general, in overall good condition. Offered in a decorative wood and plaster gilt frame in good condition.
